The common cold costs the economy £1.3 billion a year due to mistakes we make when we are ill.

A study found 14 per cent admit making cruicial and careless errors at work when they feel blocked up. These blunders and lower productivity rates typically cost bosses £43.76 a year per employee.

The research, released today, shows the average Briton has a snuffly cold once a year – typically for five and a half days.

Feeling congested also means we tend to lose sleep, leaving us “wooly headed” at work the next day. It’s astonishing to see something as common as congestion with a cold can have such an effect on functionality.
