Discover the health benefits of using your spice rack. This week: Turmeric for damping down inflammation.
Turmeric’s antioxidising abilities make it a good preservative, and the main component, curcumin, also works as an anti-inflammatory.
A study by Thai scientists involving people with knee osteoarthritis found that those who took 2 g of turmeric daily for six weeks experienced as much relief from symptoms as those who were given 800 mg of Ibuprofen. Another inflammatory condition, ulcerative colitis – which affects the large intestine – was found to stay in remmission longer if curcumin was used alongside standard medication, according to a study in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
Try having a bit more turmeric if you suffer from dyspepsia (also known as indigestion) as Indonesian scientists have also found that it stimulates the gallbladder to produce bile, which may ease gas, bloating and other stomach discomfort.
Try Thisilyn Turmeric Xtra which combines the medicinal benefits of both Turmeric and Artichoke. For more information visit www.turmericxtra.co.uk. Always read the label.
