It is International Women’s Day this Friday 8th and Mother’s Day on Sunday 10th. What an excellent combination to celebrate the women and mothers in our life and make their days special with gifts of nature.
Nature has started to blossom. The first signs of spring, flowers have started to give a nice show in gardens, parks and florists. Present your loved ladies on both days with a bouquet made of Daffodils, Tulips, Hyacinth, Lily-of-the-valley and Snowdrops (the latter from your garden only or florist as they are protected species in the wild). These flowers smell gorgeous, are pretty and none the less three of them have medicinal properties.
Daffodils (Narcissus spp.) and Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) contain a compound called galanthamine, which is used in Alzheimer’s Disease treatment. It is now manufactured synthetically but it was first discovered in Snowdrops. Lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria majalis) is an excellent heart tonic that traditionally has been used with elderly for heart disease and different heart conditions. You are not only giving beauty to your ladies but plants with benefits. Although, please do not eat or in any form ingest these plants as they can be toxic. Just enjoy their beauty and smell.
You may also like to spoil your mother, girlfriend, fiancé or wife with a goody-bag of herbal medicines that will help them glow this spring. You can help them lose the winter greyness and let them shine with St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum). This herbal medicine will improve their mood and guard any evil spirits, as the old tradition states. If your mum is going through the change you could combine St John’s Wort with Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) to help them be balanced. In case your ladies have had a stressful time at work or the weather change is affecting them you may would like to add Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) that helps them to cope with stress and provides them with energy. This combination of herbs will help your ladies to be at their best.
If only the weather were kind to us you may like to go for a picnic and prepare a picnic meal from healthy foods high in antioxidants. Pack some strawberries as they are full of vitamin C, carrots and red peppers which are rich in beta-carotene. Hummous containing chickpeas is high in protein and phytoestrogens that can benefit menopausal ladies. Also include tinned oily fish such as mackerel, sardines, herring and salmon, because they are packed with good fats (omega 3) which help your skin glow and benefits your body in general. You may also like to through some nuts (Brazil nuts, almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts and walnuts) and seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, sesame and poppy seeds) as an alternative or in addition to fish. You are allowed some red wine as it is high in resveratrol, which is an excellent antioxidant that can maintain and promote heart and cardiovascular health.
I believe you have a whole package here. I hope you can make your loved ones happy this weekend. I would love to hear any feedback.
Happy Women’s Day and Mother’s Day!
